The SNHD and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once. Those at higher risk for the virus should be screened at least once a year, and as frequently as every three months. Health experts say early diagnosis is critical to survival.
The SNHD says Black Americans comprised 40% of the 34,800 new cases of HIV diagnoses in 2019, and health officials say 13% don’t know their status. The event is designed to combat those statistics through testing and public education.
