LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Newly obtained 911 call captures frantic moments after a shooting inside a Five Below store, as callers told dispatchers an employee had been shot and begged for medical help.
The shooting happened on June 17, just after 4:30 p.m. at a business in the 2100 block of North Rainbow Boulevard, near Lake Mead Boulevard.
In one call, a shopper told a dispatcher, “Someone got shot,” and said the victim was “laying in the back of the store.” The caller said the shooting “just happened” and that the person who fired the gun “ran out” of the store.
Another caller, who identified herself as the store manager, told 911 that an argument turned into violence. “They started fighting, then he pulled out his gun and started shooting,” she said, adding that “he shot one of the employees.”
The manager said the employee was bleeding and “dozing out,” according to the 911 call.
Several callers reported hearing multiple shots. One caller told dispatchers it sounded like “five shots,” while another described hearing “four, five” shots.
According to the 911 callers, the gunman left the scene.
Two days later, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials issued a warrant for David Nathaniel Vasquez, who is believed to be the suspect.
Family members have spoken out, identifying the victim as Brandon Lucas, 31.
“Our family member’s life was taken while at work,” said Shekiera Wright, Lucas’s cousin. “It shouldn’t be that easy for someone to come in and locate someone and take their life.”
According to court documents, text messages sent by a man to his coworker allegedly led to the fatal shooting at the Las Vegas Five Below.
Detectives say surveillance video shows Vasquez entering the store around 4:29 p.m., approaching Lucas in the tech area, and then quickly escalating into a fight. The store manager told investigators she tried to stand between them and de-escalate. Vasquez then allegedly shot Lucas and then fled the scene.
At this time, Vasquez has not been arrested and is facing multiple counts, including open murder.
