LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police said a suspect was shot and killed by an officer after the suspect ran out of the Walmart on Boulder Highway armed with a handgun moments after another man was shot inside the business.

The officer-involved shooting happened on Tuesday, July 21, around 6:03 a.m. in the 5100 block of Boulder Highway, near Nellis Boulevard.

This is the eighth officer-involved shooting and the fifth fatal incident that has happened this year so far, said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Assistant Sheriff Brian Peterson.

Las Vegas police identified the officer involved in the shooting Thursday as 29-year-old Officer Cristobal Magana. He has been with LVMPD since 2024. Peterson said Magana fired six rounds.

The suspect was identified as Travis Ward, 35. Police said Ward fired one round during the incident.

Police responded to reports of a physical altercation at the business. The caller could be heard yelling at several people and telling one person not to throw a rock, said LVMPD.

The first arriving officer parked and began exiting his patrol vehicle when he heard a gunshot from inside the business and saw several people run out, officials said.

At the same time, the caller told dispatch someone had been shot, according to LVMPD.

LVMPD reports Ward then ran out of the business armed with a gun. Magana gave commands for Ward to drop the weapon, but Ward did not comply, and Magana fired, striking him, said officials.

Ward was taken into custody, and medical personnel responded, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, said police.

Additional officers entered the business and located a man who had been shot, police said. The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The victim was reported to be in stable condition, said officials.

Investigators later learned the victim and two women were involved in a fight outside the business before the shooting, according to police.

One woman hit the man in the face with a rock, and another called her boyfriend — later identified as Ward — and asked him to bring a gun to the business. Police said Ward drove to the location, ran inside, found the man and shot him before running out.

Police said the two women involved in the initial fight were arrested. Court records confirm they face various battery-related charges. According to an arrest report, the two women involved were identified as Raqiya Smith and Amena Blue.

Officials said investigators are still working to determine what the altercation was about and whether the people involved knew each other.

If Ward had survived, police said he would have faced charges including attempted murder, discharging a firearm where a person might be endangered, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, and burglary.
