LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The No. 1 seeded UNLV Lady Rebels fell 71-59 in the Mountain West Championships semifinals to No. 4 seeded San Diego State on Tuesday evening at Thomas & Mack Center.
The Scarlet & Gray (25-7) had three players score in double-figures and were led by Alyssa Brown’s 15 points. Brown shot 4-for-9 from the field, made three three-pointers and was 4-for-5 at the charity stripe. Kiara Jackson was the second-leading scorer with 14 points, while Amarachi Kimpson put up 10 points, respectively. McKinna Brackens led the squad in rebounds, bringing down 10 boards on the night.
The Aztecs (24-9) had five players in double-digits and were led by Veronica Sheffey who had 15 points. Naomi Panganiban had 14 points, while Kim Villalobos collected 11 points. Jazlen Green and Adryana Quezada each had 10 points, respectively. Cali Clark led San Diego State in rebounds with nine.
TURNING POINT: The Lady Rebels were able to trim the deficit to eight points, 52-44, with an eight-point scoring run in the fourth quarter with 6:30 left to play. UNLV was able to then get within seven, 57-50, after two free throws by Brown. SDSU then pushed its lead back to 12 with 40 seconds left.
OTHER NOTES:
- UNLV had 12 assists on the night, and were led by Jackson’s six.
- Brown had two steals and a blocked shot against the Aztecs.
- Macy Spencer had seven points on the night shooting 3-for-5 from the field and had a three-pointer.
- UNLV out-rebounded SDSU 40-38.
- The Aztecs out-shot the Lady Rebels from the field 45.5% (25 of 55) to 27.7% (18 of 65) and the three-point line 50.0% (8 of 16) to 23.3% (7 of 30).
