LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Smoke from lithium-ion batteries on a conveyor belt set off alarms at a Las Vegas UPS facility Monday night, prompting Clark County firefighters to rush in and remove two smoking crates before flames could ignite.

Crews responded to the fire alarm at the UPS facility at the 300 block of Arby Ave, near Warm Springs and Bermuda, around 8 p.m., after reports that a small crate of lithium-ion batteries began smoking and triggered the building’s alarm.

The first engine arrived and found light smoke but no heat or active fire, according to the Clark County Fire Department. Another engine arrived shortly after and assisted in tracking down the source, officials added.

Firefighters later located two small crates of lithium-ion batteries on a conveyor belt that were emitting smoke but had not caught fire. Crews removed the crates from the building and moved them outside as a precaution. UPS’ hazardous materials contractor handled remediation of the batteries.

No injuries were reported. The extent of any property damage was not immediately known.
