LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – There are over 1,000 open teaching positions in the Clark County School District, with only five days until students return to class.

FOX5 is getting answers about the district’s plans if those positions are not filled.

Assistant Human Resources Officer Jason Ginoza says about 80% of those opening are expected to be filled by long-term subs.

“And what about the other 20%?” FOX5 asked.

“The other 20%, school leaders have plans, and school principals understand their situation and how they’re managing that situation and handling that situation. So, it’s difficult for me to comment on that because every site is unique,” Ginoza says.

He says one option is to combine classrooms, but because the decision is ultimately up to school principals, he didn’t want to speculate on official plans.

FOX5 also asked if they incentivize long-term subs for working at certain schools over others.

Ginoza did not have an answer at the time, but the district’s website shows that long term subs filling vacancies in Title One Schools get paid $40 more each day than other subs- from $140 to $180.

He says the district has the highest need in special education and elementary school positions.

FOX5 asked about the district’s plans to fill special education positions, and have not heard back.
