Las Vegas Valley homeowners benefit from National Rebuilding Day

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Saturday is National Rebuilding Day, and for six Las Vegas Valley homeowners, the date will be something to celebrate.

A total of six homes will get some tender loving care courtesy of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada. Volunteer crews got an early start Thursday morning at a home on the east side.

Each crew adopts a particular home owned by a less-fortunate person or family, and makes minor repairs and does some general sprucing.

“These are some cleanup things that he can’t do on his own, we’ve already taken care of his house with a critical home repair, and they adopted him to give these non-critical things just to give him some pride in ownership in his home, make the neighborhood look a little bit better,” said Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada CEO, Bob Cleveland.

This morning, a house near Twain Avenue and Boulder Highway got a thorough clean-up, followed by a fresh coat of paint and a little xeriscaping.

“We removed all the old, dead grass, all the dead bushes. They’re putting weed barrier down, they’re putting rock down, so he’s got a lower water bill,” Cleveland said. “They removed a bunch of debris from the backyard, you know, our older clients tend to collect things over time and it gets in the way. It has places for rats and bugs to get infested and that’s a health concern, so we’re trying to get as much of that out of the way as we can.”

But this is only the beginning.

Cleveland expects more than 500 volunteers to converge on five other homes on Saturday and Sunday for National Rebuilding Day. It’s one of two big days for Rebuilding Together. The other is Make A Difference Day, although the organization does home repairs throughout the year.

”Our organization is special because when you volunteer, you’re actually hands-on with the client. So the client’s sitting up there and he’s been talking with them, he’s extremely grateful for everything that they’re doing for him,” said Rebuilding Southern Nevada CEO, Bob Cleveland.

To qualify for assistance, you must qualify as being low-income or disabled. Assistance is also available to a senior citizens and veterans.
