LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A frightening warning from your mortgage holder could scare you right into a scam. Recent reports from the Reno area show it’s happening here in Nevada.
It starts with a call from an imposter claiming to be with your lender. They’ll say your home’s on the verge of foreclosure and offer to help get you back on track. If you decline, they’ll threaten you with the loss of your home. If you proceed, you’ll lose both your money and all your sensitive personal information.
As with most scams, verification is the key to protection in this situation. Hang up immediately and call your lender directly using the phone number listed on your statement. Threats or pressure tactics should always be viewed as red flags, as should any demand for unconventional payment methods, like gift cards, pre-paid debit cards, or cryptocurrency. And, as always, never share any sensitive information with anyone who contacts you unsolicited.
