LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man has been sentenced on murder charges in connection with the 2023 killing of his grandmother and two other men at a Las Vegas apartment complex.

A judge handed Spencer McDonald life without the possibility of parole for all three murder charges.

Las Vegas Metro Police responded to a call at the Rancho de Montana Apartments on E. Flamingo at approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 27, 2023.

The two men killed were identified as Andrew John Graden and Christopher Paul Brassard, according to the Clark County Coroner. The grandmother, Diana Raker Vail, was 80 years old when she was killed.

Initial details revealed maintenance was called to the apartment complex for a welfare check when McDonald attacked them, police said. One of the workers was able to escape, but police said the other worker died.

Grand jury documents revealed Vail and Graden were found dead in a nearby master bedroom. Detectives say McDonald used a “cosplay sword” to murder his grandmother. He then waited for Graden to return to the apartment before attacking him and dragging his body into the bedroom.

According to witness interviews in court, Brassard was a maintenance worker at the complex. Horacio Carlin, the maintenance supervisor at the time of the incident, said they both went to do a welfare check on McDonald’s apartment. Inside, Brussard said they should call police, and Carlin said that’s when they were attacked.

Carlin said he was able to escape with injuries, but Brassard died. Carlin requires a cane to walk following the injury.
