LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The family of an inmate left to die in a jail cell will receive the biggest wrongful death settlement in Nevada’s history, according to a law firm.

According to a press release, the state has greed to pay $4.6 million in the case of Walker vs. State of Nevada. Officials say it centers around the death of Christian Walker who died after he was beaten by correctional officers at High Desert State Prison.

The case claimed officers prevented nurses from giving him emergency medical treatment and he died alone in his cell.

The family’s attorney shared a statement, saying, in part, “this case has always been about more than just compensation. It has been about accountability and the value of human life. All my client has sought is justice for her son. We are grateful that his part of the case is behind us.”

While the family’s case against the state is over, officials say they are still pursuing action against Clark County.
