LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — It is a massive, multi-million road project in Henderson, Reimagine Boulder Highway. Construction began in August of last year. It is scheduled to continue until July 2027. The seven-mile stretch through Henderson, one of the oldest roads in the Vegas Valley, is being modernized. Is the road project on track?
The city of Henderson tells FOX5 work is continuing but people who live, work and drive Boulder Highway are questioning the pace of construction.
“It is like dat dat dat dat,” that’s how reed Allen Thompson describes driving on Boulder highway with construction is underway.
“I just can’t believe they tear up the roads and then they don’t do nothing about it,” Thompson assert. He is on the road everyday as he works on Boulder near Sunset. He wants construction to move faster.
“I haven’t seen them out here for probably over three weeks now. Not one soul. They were cutting it into the concrete couple weeks ago,” shared Thompson. Thompson worries about drivers going past the cones and into the cut-out sections of the road.
“It’s hard to ride, drive through at night because you know you can’t see that. It’s so pitch dark out here,” Thompson explained.
Wednesday evening around 4:30pm, FOX5 started on the furthest point south of Boulder Highway and drove all the way to where Henderson ends and Clark County’s section of the road begins. We saw traffic cones everywhere lining he entire stretch of Henderson end-to-end. We also saw lots of heavy equipment, but we did not see any construction crews at work.
“Get it done. That’s my thoughts,” Thompson shared.
The city is touting what has been accomplished so far.
“Over 20,000 square feet of new storm drains now help keep our streets clear during heavy rains, all 17 intersections have brand new traffic signal wiring, and over 100 new streetlights keep things safer at night. Transit just got a big boost too with smoother bus lanes and bold, red concrete stops built to last,” shared Steven Conner, a city of Henderson engineer.
The multimillion-dollar road improvement project on Boulder Highway is only upgrading the Henderson portion of the roadway. Not the stretch of road in the city of Las Vegas nor Clark County.
The city of Henderson says the improvements underway now will benefit residents, businesses and commuters for decades to come. Their goal is to make Boulder Highway safer and more walkable. Boulder highway is among the deadliest stretches of road for pedestrians in the state.
