LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — From self-doubt to graduation day, a Las Vegas graduate is proving it’s never too late to change your future.

For most graduates, crossing the stage is a finish line. For Sheena Harper, it’s proof they had finally outrun the self-doubt.

“Because I always used to think that a person like me would never get anywhere,” Harper said.

Harper is one of several students completing the Chicanos Por La Causa Youthbuild program. It’s a 6-month program where young adults earn their high school equivalency while training in construction and preparing for careers.

“I went there, did what I had to do, got my high school diploma, got my OSHA 10, got everything that I need to get, and I am on my way,” Harper said.

Youthbuild blends academics with job training. Students study math, science, and social studies, all while earning construction certifications and even getting paid to attend class.

“So they do get paid $15 an hour for two days a week while they attend the construction classroom, and once they complete their HiSET, they’re able to attend class, construction class for longer,” said program manager, Regina Burgos.

In six months, Harper picked up construction certifications and skills they say will carry them into a brighter future.

“I came out here broke with nothing at all. My mom was trying to help me as much as she could,” Harper said.

Harper said they’re ready to jump-start her career in construction to be able to provide for her family.

The next group of students will begin the program in just a few months. For more information on the Youthbuild program and how to sign up, visit the Chicanos Por La Causa website.
