LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Because of the federal government shutdown, a program that provides breastfeeding support, nutritious foods and education has suspended services, officals said Wednesday.
The Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada WIC Program announced Wednesday that all program operations will be “temporarily” suspended as a result of the government shutdown.
Officials say it impacts services across all 28 federally-recognized tribal communities in Nevada, as well as non-tribal families served through ITCN offices in Reno, Elko and Las Vegas.
“ITCN WIC serves hundreds of tribal and non-tribal families across Nevada who rely on WIC to provide nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education,” said Blanca Plascencia-Reyna, MPH, ITCN WIC program director. “Our team is deeply saddened by this interruption and the impact it will have on families, especially those living in rural and tribal communities where food access is already limited. We remain hopeful that funding will be restored quickly so we can resume serving our families.”
The suspension starts Thursday. Officials say all ITCN WIC offices will be closed until further notice, no WIC benefits will be available or issued and program staff will not be able to conduct appointments or provide assistance. All existing participant appointments will be rescheduled once federal funding is restored and operations continue.
