LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are not any closer to reopening the government, and the impacts are now trickling down to services that rely on federal funding.
In Nevada, tens of thousands of people who use food stamps through the SNAP program could now be at risk.
Tuesday, FOX5 talked to Three Square Food Bank, which serves low-income and food-insecure families in the Las Vegas Valley. We asked how the loss of SNAP benefits will impact their operations and the lives of the people they serve. The president and CEO tells us that for every meal the food bank provides, SNAP provides nine meals, making it a crucial resource that could be halted next month.
“We are very concerned that if the federal government shutdown continues into the first part of November, tens of thousands of Nevadans may lose their SNAP benefits,” said Beth Martino. “And for many, that is the primary source of grocery funds for their families. So we are preparing and gearing up to get more food out in the community to try to meet that increased need.”
Martino tells us even before the shutdown, Three Square saw a 16% jump over the last four months in people needing food assistance. She says the shutdown has only made that worse.
