LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Search and rescue crews rescued two hikers Monday evening after they became stranded on a ridge in Red Rock Canyon.

The hikers called for rescue from Calico Basin around 6 p.m. after running out of water and becoming unable to progress up or down the mountainous terrain as darkness approached, according to search and rescue officials.

The hikers were wearing running shoes and light jackets that were not appropriate for cold night conditions. Officials added that they had only one headlamp between them.

Three search and rescue personnel responded by ground, beginning their operation from the Kraft Mountain parking lot. The rescue teams were able to reach the hikers, assess their condition and begin a hike-out operation.

Both hikers and the search and rescue personnel safely returned to the parking lot area. Neither hiker required medical attention.

Search and rescue officials reminded hikers to follow safety practices when heading into wilderness areas. They recommend the TRAIL acronym for planning outings:

  • (T)ell someone where you are going
  • (R)esearch the weather and plan accordingly should you be out longer than anticipated
  • Have (A)ppropriate clothing, first aid, additional water and food for your planned outing
  • Have (I)nclement weather clothing and appropriate overnight provisions
  • Have a (L)ight source, locator beacon, additional batteries and charging sources for electronics
