LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Congresswoman Dina Titus is set to announce a new grant of more than $1 million supporting UNLV’s Instrumentation for Pathogen Detection in Water project on Thursday.
The funding will be used to purchase new equipment that can measure pathogen levels in water and strengthen public health and water security efforts across Nevada.
The project’s goals include:
- Building monitoring systems to help detect illicit substances like fentanyl
- Tracking infectious diseases through wastewater surveillance
- Deploying solar-powered technology to help produce clean drinking water
Officials say early detection of threats like bird flu or m-pox in wastewater could help communities respond faster — including quicker access to vaccines and testing resources for groups most at risk.
