LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Southwest Gas employees spent the day packing care packages to help unhoused people get through the summer heat.

The event at Southwest Gas marked the 60th anniversary of the company’s foundation and its “Month of Giving.” About 140 employees and family members worked together to assemble 2,000 outreach kits for Help of Southern Nevada.

Each drawstring backpack includes nonperishable food, electrolyte packets and sun-protection items like aloe, lip balm and sunscreen.

“They’re going to go out immediately. And there’s a great need. We’re going into the summertime, it’s hot. Again, there’s some sun protection in there, and it’s really just going to help bridge that gap while Help is getting these individuals into permanent housing,” said Julie Williams, senior vice president of continuous improvement and optimization at Southwest Gas Corporation.

The care-package event is one of several across Nevada, Arizona and California, where Southwest Gas employees are preparing a total of 6,000 kits through the company’s “Blue” volunteer program.
