LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is honoring three officers, whose acts of compassion made a lasting impact on local residents, during this month’s Good Ticket.
Officers Scott Washburn and Omeika Berry were recognized after a welfare check on an elderly woman grieving the loss of her son and caretaker, according to officials.
Washburn requested a follow-up visit to ensure she was doing well. During the visit, Berry learned the woman’s son had always dreamed of becoming a police officer but couldn’t pursue it because he was deaf. When the mother asked if officers could drive by the funeral with lights and sirens as a tribute, Berry helped make it happen, creating a powerful moment for the family.
Officer Derek Burnett was also honored after being approached by a community member struggling with the death of a close friend to cancer. Burnett stayed with the man for more than an hour, listening and talking him through his grief. The man later shared on X how much the conversation meant, publicly thanking Burnett for his kindness and support.
