LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Nevada Department of Transportation is repaving Sunset Road between Las Vegas Boulevard and Annie Oakley after nearly 27 years.
The last time the road was repaved was before the turn of the last century. NDOT is fixing 3 miles of roadway at the Henderson city limit line.
“Crews have been able to make some progress on fixing roadway deficiencies, or any problems on the roadway on Sunset,” said Kelsey McFarland, NDOT spokesperson.
Potholes spotted in 2024
FOX5 spotted large potholes near Paradise Road in October 2024. NDOT officially began the repaving project late last year, before winter delayed the work.
“We did have to do that temporary suspension. Temperatures were just too cold to do paving,” McFarland said. “We need warm enough temperatures to allow the pavement to cure.”
Permits delayed start
Cold winter temperatures were not the only thing that slowed down the repaving project.
“Well, we did get started immediately. We wanted to get started maybe a bit sooner in the year, but we were waiting on some permits so that we could get work going,” McFarland said.
The permits were for utility work that needed to be completed by Southwest Gas under the roadway before full repaving could begin.
NDOT does not plan to upgrade street lighting along the 3 miles of Sunset Road.
“This project was primarily about rehabilitating the pavement, fixing any deficiencies or potholes that you see, and kind of upgrading that pavement,” McFarland said.
Lane restrictions, closures planned
Repaving lane restrictions along Sunset Road will continue primarily between Eastern Avenue and Annie Oakley nightly from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. until the end of April.
NDOT is planning the full closure of the Sunset Road offramp from the northbound Airport Connector starting Monday at 9 p.m.
The Sunset Road onramp to the southbound Airport Connector will close between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday for paving and bridge inspection work.
The entire Sunset Road repaving project between Las Vegas Boulevard and Annie Oakley is expected to be completed by the end of June.
