LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The man charged with attempted murder related to a brutal attack on a Clark County judge appeared in court on Thursday morning for initial arraignment
During the hearing, Redden appeared alongside his new lawyer, Carl Arnold, and entered a plea of not guilty based upon reason of insanity.
Deobra Redden could be seen leaping over the bench to attack Justice Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus in a Jan. 3 video that went viral. Redden was present in court for sentencing related to a previous case.
On. Feb. 8, Redden was indicted by a grand jury on nine charges, including attempted murder, battery on a protected person, and extortion by threat.
After refusing to appear at his next scheduled hearing, Redden was issued a court order instructing him to appear. For that appearance, he was brought into the courtroom shackled and masked.
“I want to make it clear that I am not changing or modifying the sentence I was in the process of imposing last week before I was interrupted by the defendant’s actions,” Judge Holthus said. Redden was sentenced to up to four years in the previous case.
Outside the courtroom, Redden’s sister and foster mom say Redden suffers from schizophrenia and was not on his medication when he attacked Judge Holthus.
Redden’s lawyer is also set to hold a press conference following the hearing.
