LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and Valley Fire officials held a joint briefing Wednesday urging residents to make safe choices during Fourth of July celebrations.

Officials said they want everyone to enjoy the nation’s 250th birthday, but warned that all types of fireworks can be dangerous — and some are illegal.

“To be clear, fireworks purchased outside of Clark County or fireworks that have not been inspected and approved by local fire officials pose a significant danger to our community and are illegal,” Undersheriff Andrew Walsh said.

Walsh further clarified which fireworks to avoid.

“If a firework leaves the ground, explodes in the air, or was purchased outside of Clark County, it is likely illegal,” he said.

Extra patrols, curfew enforcement planned

Walsh said Metro will have extra officers on patrol watching for illegal activities, including illegal fireworks. Officers will also enforce juvenile curfews and watch for drunk drivers, he said.

Walsh reminded parents that it is their responsibility to know where their teenagers are.

Fire department expects surge in calls

Clark County Fire Department Deputy Chief Wayne Dailey said firefighters and paramedics are preparing for a high-volume night.

“The 4th of July is one of the busiest nights of the year for the fire departments. Every year, the Clark County Fire Department alone runs more than 200 fire-related calls on Independence Day. That’s nearly ten times the amount we see on an average day,” Dailey said.

Fireworks safety tips

The City of Las Vegas’s Fire Marshal Assistant Chief Sherri Shoup offered guidance for those planning to use legal fireworks.

“Keep a bucket. At least half full of water. And even better, a garden hose that’s hooked up and ready to go should you need a water supply,” Shoup said.

Shoup said fireworks should be placed on flat, clear ground free of combustibles — such as bare ground or a driveway. She said combustible materials should be kept 10 to 20 feet away from fireworks.

Shoup also noted that fireworks are illegal after the Fourth of July — including safe and sane fireworks.

“One minute after midnight when it turns to July 5th, any fireworks are illegal to use in the Valley,” she said.

How to report illegal fireworks

Residents who want to report illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July are asked not to call 911. Police and fire officials are urging the public to call 311 instead to avoid overloading emergency dispatchers.
