LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Seniors living alone in Boulder City don’t have to feel alone.

The Boulder City Police Department’s free “You Are Not Alone” program goes beyond welfare checks, pairing older residents with trained volunteers who make weekly phone calls and, when needed, stop by in person — sometimes simply to talk.

In a car marked “volunteer,” Boulder City police volunteer Cherie Anderson can be seen driving across town to connect with the seniors she serves.

“I’ve got a client base right now of approximately 22 people. I call them every Tuesday… if they’re lonely, I do home visits,” Anderson said. “We sit, and we talk.”

The regular check-ins can turn into something more personal.

“Last week, one of the ladies that I was talking to said, ‘Hey, can you come over just to have coffee?’” Anderson recounted.

Rides, prescriptions and peace of mind

Anderson said volunteers often help coordinate rides to doctor’s appointments and assist with prescription pick-ups, providing support that can be especially important for seniors with limited mobility and family members living out of state.

Eighty-eight-year-old widower Martina said the home visits offer reassurance.

“It’s like a security blanket,” Martina said. “For people like my family that know that I’m in Nevada by myself, that I’m not really by myself. I can reach out, and I can get someone who cares. And not everyone can do that.”

Another senior, Adrian, said he is mostly alone in his home.

“I’m pretty much homebound,” Adrian said. “As you get older, you can’t take the weather.”

With his daughters and a son living out of state, Adrian said Anderson has become his closest local support system.

“I know that if I need something, all I have to do is pick up the phone and she will help me out,” he said. “I know if I didn’t have it, I would be concerned. I would be nervous.”

Anderson said the work is rewarding.

“There’s sometimes you know you wake up in the morning and think, ‘I don’t… I just want to stay home and be lazy,’” she said. “But when I come back from visiting everybody, it makes me feel like I’ve done something good.”

Program needs more volunteers

Boulder City police said the “You Are Not Alone” program currently has the largest number of clients it has ever served and needs additional volunteers to help make calls and conduct home visits.
