LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County officials unanimously approved plans for a heart-shaped resort hotel and recreational venue on a Las Vegas Strip-area site long marked by two towering steel “matchsticks” left behind from a failed Ferris wheel project.
The development is proposed on about 12 acres generally located east of Las Vegas Boulevard South and south of Mandalay Bay Road in Paradise, between Mandalay Bay Road and Four Seasons Drive near Haven Street, according to the Clark County Zoning Commission meeting.
During the meeting, it was said the site has remained largely unchanged since the early 2000s, when a Ferris wheel was proposed but never built.
The spokesperson representing the property owner said neighboring stakeholders want the partially built structures removed or the property developed.

The property spokesperson described plans for a resort tower with an LED facade, along with an outdoor recreation area and pedestrian-focused venue in front of the hotel, featuring restaurants and retail.
The concept is intended to function like a pedestrian entertainment corridor, though smaller in scale than Fremont Street, they said.
The plan also includes a parking garage spanning an existing drainage channel and improvements tied to a pedestrian tunnel in the area, according to the presenter.
The spokesperson told the commission the project team has been coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration and Clark County’s Department of Aviation, and that the hotel’s height was reduced by about 60 feet to secure FAA approval.
The spokesperson presented renderings of the approved hotel, which show the proposed heart-shaped building to be the newest addition to the Las Vegas Strip.
The reduction also lowered the planned room count, according to the presenter.
A motion to approve items tied to the project passed unanimously.
