LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County commissioners are partnering with local health organizations for a public event focused on addiction prevention and overdose awareness next week.
Commission Chairman Michael Naft and Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick are joining the Southern Nevada Health District and Foundation for Recovery for “Addiction Prevention and Overdose Awareness Day” on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Event details
The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon outside the Clark County Commission Chambers alongside the regular board meeting. Health District staff and recovery advocates will distribute free opioid overdose reversal kits and fentanyl test strips to community members while supplies last. Information on addiction prevention and treatment options available across Southern Nevada will also be on hand.
Proclamation and recognition
Commissioners Naft and Kirkpatrick will present a proclamation to Moms Against Drugs and the There is No Hero In Heroin Foundation (TINHIH), formally recognizing Aug. 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day.
TINHIH is a Las Vegas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates the Alternative Peer Group, a drop-in center for teens in recovery from substance use disorder.
Local health officials said expanding access to free, evidence-based tools and connecting people to care can help more people recognize the signs of an overdose, respond quickly, and save lives.
