LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign will be illuminated in turquoise and purple on Thursday morning to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.
Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick is hosting the special ceremony at 9 a.m. at the landmark. The turquoise and purple colors are the international symbols for suicide prevention.
This year’s event highlights the work of Hope Means Nevada, a community-based nonprofit leading the state’s Suicide Prevention September Taskforce.
“It’s important that we come together to shine a light on the resources and hope available to families across our community,” Commissioner Kirkpatrick said in a statement. “Every person in Clark County, especially our young people, deserves to know that support is close by and that reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.”

Suicide is currently a leading cause of death among Nevada youth between the ages of 12 and 19. According to organization officials, September has the highest suicide rates among individuals between the ages of 15 and 24.
Hope Means Nevada works to build empathy and mental health resilience among young people through its Teen Hope Network and statewide partnerships.
Landmark lightings create opportunities to start vital, life-saving conversations, according to Janna Velasco, the executive director of Hope Means Nevada.
“These conversations break down stigma, bring greater attention to suicide prevention and ensure more people know that support is available 24/7 through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline,” Velasco said.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential and available 24/7 by call or text to anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.
