LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Two drivers were left in critical condition after a wrong-way driver sped head-on into traffic in west Las Vegas last week.

The incident occurred just before noon on Thursday, October 15 near Sahara Avenue east of Tenaya Way.

Police identified the driver Corazon Blackwell, who was driving a blue 2022 Honda CR-V eastbound in the westbound bus lanes along West Sahara Avenue. She continued the wrong way at high speed toward South Tenaya Way, according to an arrest report obtained by FOX5 on Tuesday.

Police said the front of the Honda hit the front of the BMW head-on in the center westbound lane. The Honda then spun about 360 degrees and slid about 63 feet before stopping.

The driver of the BMW was taken to UMC Trauma Center with a reported laceration to his liver and spleen and multiple other injuries, according to police. Blackwell had to be mechanically extricated from the driver’s seat and was also taken to UMC Trauma in critical condition.

Two witnesses told police they had to swerve to avoid the Honda just before the crash.

One witness reported seeing the SUV coming at him west of Tenaya Way, describing it as going “probably as fast as that car can go.” He said the female driver looked “crazed,” barely missed him, then veered into oncoming traffic behind him. He described hearing what sounded like “an explosion” when the Honda struck the BMW.

The impact tore the Honda’s left front wheel off. The wheel went airborne and smashed through the windshield of a westbound 2015 Hyundai Elantra. The driver was reportedly not injured.

Police said data from the Honda’s airbag control module showed it was traveling about 93 mph at impact, which is more than double the limit, the arrest report states.

Blackwell was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center on a felony charge of reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm. She remained hospitalized Tuesday, missing a scheduled court appearance, records show.

The crash remains under investigation.
