LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It was one of the biggest fires in the Las Vegas Valley, an apartment complex under construction close to Durango Casino.
It erupted in a massive fireball. Ash and embers falling onto the 215 nearby shutting down the highway.
Now, after almost two years, considerable progress has been made to rebuild what was destroyed and finally open the apartments.
On June 20, 2023, a fire engulfed the construction site of the Kaktus Life apartments, high winds fueling the fire. Hundreds of would-be apartments burned. Only the clubhouse survived.
One firefighter was injured in the days-long firefight. No injuries were reported to the construction crews working on site when the fire started.
Specialized dogs were brought in and arson was ruled out but the exact cause of the massive fire was never determined. Damages were estimated at $100 million according to Clark County.
Today, apartment buildings have risen again. They appear close to completion with glass doors added to balconies. Cranes and other heavy equipment are all over the construction site.
According to Clark County records, permits have been issued to replace the apartment buildings lost in the fire as well as the parking garage and just last week revisions of their permits were approved to improve fire safety.
Back in February, FOX5 reached out to the developer asking about their timeline. We never heard back.
Their website lists the complex at the corner of 215 and Buffalo, now called Kaktus Life at the Curve with 614 apartments as well as retail space, simply as “under construction.”
According to the developer, construction first started back in September of 2017.
