LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County School District broke ground Monday on a new elementary school in the northwest valley.
Skye Canyon Elementary School will serve up to 850 students in 53 classrooms when it opens in August 2027.
“We’re really excited today. We have a groundbreaking for our newest coming elementary school here at Sky Canyon and Schaumburg, up here in the northwest part of the valley,” said Jesse Welsh, deputy superintendent of teaching and learning for Clark County School District.
The school has been part of the district’s bond program for several years.
“Big thanks to our legislature for continuing to renew that,” Welsh said. “This has been one that’s been on the docket for several years now, and we’re at the point where we’re ready to move forward and break ground with the school opening for the 27-28 school year.”
The northwest valley has seen significant growth in recent years, creating a need for additional school capacity.
“Despite the fact that we have other parts of the valley where we have declining enrollment, we have a lot of growth up here in the northwest, and so we have a need for additional school capacity up here,” Welsh said.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by CCSD Board of School Trustees Clerk Lydia Dominguez, Board Member Lisa Satory, Superintendent Jhone Ebert, Deputy Superintendent of Business Operations Felicia Gonzales, Welsh and Chief of Facilities Brandon McLaughlin.
The new campus is located at 8401 N. Shaumber Road in Las Vegas.
