LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Artists and community members gathered for an art crawl in the Las Vegas Arts District as First Friday remains on pause following a deadly shooting last month.
A 15-year-old was killed during First Friday, and a 17-year-old was charged in connection with the shooting. The city and First Friday organizers have paused the event while discussing safety enhancements.
Artists told FOX5 they rely on First Friday for sales and were grateful for the art crawl taking its place Friday night.
Dozens of businesses hosted around 20 local artists inside their spaces. The Arts District Action Coalition created the event with the 18b Arts District board.
Vendor and artist Heather Porter said she used to bring her daughter to First Friday but hesitated to bring her to the art crawl because of safety concerns. She said she wanted to support the community until First Friday returns.
Some artists described the shooting as an isolated incident and said they want First Friday to return as soon as possible.
The Arts District Action Coalition said it plans to hold another art crawl next month if First Friday has not returned by then.
Mayor Shelley Berkley said the plan is to bring First Friday back in January. She said the plan may include age limits and metal detectors.
