LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Motor Speedway teamed up with Vitalant and Speedway Children’s Charities for a one-day blood drive Friday, trading donations for free tickets to this fall’s South Point 400 NASCAR Playoff race.

The infield media center turned into a pop-up blood donation site as dozens of donors filed in to give blood.

Each donor walked away with a voucher for two complimentary tickets to the event in October. Many also signed up for Vitalant’s Donor Rewards Program, which added a $15 gift card as a bonus for those who gave blood in June.

First-time donors answer the call

For some, it was their first time ever donating blood, and they said the chance to save lives and still catch the race made it an easy decision.

“It’s a fantastic feeling, honestly. It is my first time donating blood. My family has, but I’ve never done it, but this is my first time,” said Brandon Diaz. “If they’re gonna do it, why not just help?”

Patrick Lindsey, general manager of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, said between 60 and 80 appointments were scheduled for the drive.

“It’s one of our main goals as we kind of go throughout the entire year. How are we giving back to the community?” Lindsey said. “This is just one of those opportunities that we have along with Speedway Children’s Charities, which is our own foundation as well.”

The speedway said community events like the blood drive are a big part of its year-round commitment to Southern Nevada. Organizers hope even more fans turn out the next time they open the doors to give.

The South Point 400 NASCAR Playoff race is scheduled for Oct. 4.
