LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Sometimes, neighborhood safety begins with a simple step: checking on a child who may need help.

That’s what officer with the North Las Vegas Police Department did after being dispatched to a call involving a child walking alone around the neighborhood.

Police were notified after a passerby spotted the young child walking alone and feared she could be unsafe. The caller contacted authorities, and officers responded to check on the child’s well-being, officials say.

When officers arrived, they confirmed the child was safe and remained with her while they worked to locate her family.

Police expressed appreciation for the community member who acted quickly.

“We’re thankful for residents who stay alert, care enough to call, and help us protect the most vulnerable members of our city,” the department said in a social media post.

The department also offered the following reminders for families:

  • Teach children their full name, parent/guardian name, address, and phone number.
  • Talk with kids about what to do if they become lost.
  • Secure doors, gates, and exits when needed.
  • Check in often, especially with young children or children who may wander.
  • Call police immediately if you see a child alone and believe they may be unsafe.

“It takes all of us looking out for each other,” the department added, thanking the passerby for trusting their instincts and making the call.
