LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County’s Department of Environment & Sustainability is expanding shade in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods after giving away hundreds of trees in Northeast Las Vegas.

According to officials, about 400 trees in the area were distributed to close out its spring ‘Community Canopy Project’ as part of the county’s ongoing Stay Cool Clark County initiative.

In total, the Community Canopy Project distributed 2,300 trees this spring, focusing primarily on ZIP codes considered most vulnerable to the urban heat island effect.

Officials say the goal is for the trees to reach maturity and provide more shade, helping reduce extreme heat impacts in those neighborhoods.
