LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and her husband inside a Las Vegas grocery store may have planned the attack, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Alejandro Alfonso Estrada is accused of shooting and killing Victor and Amanda Frias Rosas at a Smith’s grocery store at 9750 S. Maryland Parkway on May 12. Both victims were employees at the store and were married.
Court documents obtained by FOX5 show Estrada left his North Las Vegas home at 6:46 a.m. wearing a black Spiderman T-shirt, black pants, black shoes, and carrying a black backpack. Ring camera footage captured him leaving the residence.
Custody dispute and child support
Estrada is Amanda’s ex-boyfriend. Their relationship ended in 2021. They share two children.
According to court documents, Estrada’s roommate told police Estrada said Amanda was taking him to court for child support, and he feared jail for failure to pay. Estrada allegedly quit his job and began moving out.
Break-in at the victims’ home
Neighbor surveillance placed a subject matching Estrada at Amanda and Victor’s residence on Tuesday at 10:58 a.m., according to police records. The subject was seen walking away at 11:02 a.m. The couple was not home.
Officers later found the front surveillance camera ripped off, the rear sliding glass door shattered, a .45 casing on the patio, and a projectile in the living room. The master bedroom was ransacked.
Police say Estrada left their home and walked to the Smith’s shopping center on foot, walking westbound on Silverado Ranch Boulevard.
Shooting inside store
Surveillance shows Estrada arriving at the Smith’s shopping center at 11:20 a.m. Interior video shows the suspect in the produce area, then approaching the victims as they turned into aisle four and shooting them multiple times. The shooting was reported at 11:24 a.m.
Eight .45 cartridge casings were located near the victims in the aisle.
Estrada exited the south entrance and was confronted at the pharmacy drive-thru. He was restrained by bystanders Darius Alton and Merconie Clark.
Weapons recovered
Police recovered a Sig Sauer 1911 .45 handgun with one round in the chamber on Estrada during the struggle. In his backpack, police found a CZ Scorpion Evo3 9mm semi-automatic carbine and numerous loaded magazines for both weapons.
The headstamp on the chambered round matched the casing recovered at the residence, according to the report.
Pamela Buskey-Smith, who was inside the store when the shooting happened, said she was one aisle over.
“The gunshots were so loud I couldn’t believe I was in this situation. I am in the store, you don’t know what’s going on,” Buskey-Smith said. “He was really nonchalant, just walking. He walked by my car, he walked past me.”
Another shopper said the shooting was unnerving.
“I can’t bear it, it’s unreal at this time. For you to be shopping and your life is in danger, it’s not fair, it’s not fair whatsoever,” Isaiah said.
A memorial has grown outside the Smiths’, with flowers, balloons, and photos left by co-workers, friends, and strangers.
Estrada is charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon, discharge of a gun within a structure in a prohibited area, burglary while in possession of a gun, and aggravated stalking with a deadly weapon.
