LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Danny Tarkanian said his willingness to challenge party establishment makes him the best candidate for Nevada attorney general.

Tarkanian, a Douglas County commissioner, is running in the Republican primary against three other candidates. He said his opponents include a candidate who has been a bureaucrat for the last 15 years and two elected officials who follow party lines.

“I’ve been a renegade in that regard,” Tarkanian said. “I fight our party establishment. I fight the power brokers. I fight the people that have controlled the state politically.”

Tarkanian said the party establishment and power brokers have come after him in elections because of his willingness to challenge them.

Role of attorney general

Tarkanian said he believes the attorney general’s office should be exactly like his approach to politics.

“They should be out there protecting the people that don’t have a voice, the people that aren’t the power structures, the ones that are getting abused by the system, and protect them,” he said.

He said that approach has defined his time on the Douglas County Commission. Hundreds of people in the community have thanked him, he said.

“You’re the only one that will stand up and fight for our behalf,” Tarkanian said residents have told him. “And usually they just cower to the people that have ran the county.”

Tarkanian said that record makes him the best qualified candidate for the attorney general’s office.

Law enforcement focus

Tarkanian said working with law enforcement to ensure safe communities is his top priority if elected.

“I want to work with law enforcement to make sure that we have the safest communities in the state and in the country,” he said.

Tarkanian said law enforcement is the most important aspect for the attorney general’s office.
