HENDERSON (FOX5) — Henderson first responders are rolling out a summer safety warning about how dangerous a parked car can become in just minutes.
Henderson Fire and police kicked off their “Check Your Seat in the Heat” campaign with a demonstration showing how quickly temperatures inside a car can skyrocket.
Last year, Henderson firefighters responded to 51 calls for children locked in vehicles. Nobody died, but that’s not always the case.
Firefighters say it’s important to always check your back seat before you leave your car.

“We want you to make it a habit to leave something in the back seat that you will need to bring with you when you leave your car. Something like a cell phone, a briefcase, or a handbag. That way, you’ll check the back seat before walking away,” said Chief Scott Viver of the Henderson Fire Department.
Officials say a car’s interior can climb 30 degrees in just 10 minutes, and a child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s.
If you see a child or pet in distress inside a car, call 911 immediately.
