LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Henderson Police searched, found, and cited the driver seen in a viral video speeding past a school bus and barely missing kids in the street.
FOX5 showed you the video from a driver’s dashcam off Jessup and Robindale roads; the video shows that the school bus deployed a stop arm, and multiple children crossed the street; as a driver swerved lanes and then drove past the stop sign, children had to jump out of the road to avoid getting hit.
The video had more than 300,000 views on social media and keeps circulating.
After FOX5 found and spoke to the driver who took the video, Tuesday afternoon, FOX5 brought the circulating clip to the attention of Henderson Police; by Tuesday evening, officers found the driver and cited them for reckless driving and overtaking a stopped school bus with flashing lights. Both citations are misdemeanors, but the reckless driving citation means that the driver must appear in court.
“I understand the community’s outrage over it. As a parent and also as a police officer, I have outrage over it… and upon receiving that information, we, the Traffic Bureau, we took that, we ran with it with the information that we had, and we investigated that all the way up until locating the driver and citing them for that violation,” said Captain Seth VanBeveren.
“This is a point where kids are most vulnerable. There’s a duty to stop behind the bus. And the students then get off… we need to keep in mind their safety,” Captain VanBeveren said.

Captain VanBeveren shed light on how officers work to increase visibility and crack down on drivers who may not abide by stop arms at school bus stops.
“We are out and we are working actively through not just our efforts, but also through the Southern Nevada Traffic Task Force to enforce traffic laws, especially those around our school zones and the school bus stops,” Captain VanBeveren said.
“One of the first things is increasing our visibility out on the streets is a direct relation to increasing the safety on the roadways. We take into account the time of day where we have the highest volume of traffic, where we get a lot of our complaints from, and having a bigger presence and enforcement… but also with the Southern Auto Traffic Task Force is to listen to the public, go off of the statistics that we have, find these problem areas, target them, and to issue citations and even arrests if needs be for those who are failing to stop at the bus stops,” he said.
The Captain explained the mission to create a “culture” of safe driving.
“We need to teach our young drivers about this, but also we need to set the example as seasoned drivers… the message I’d like for everyone to know is saving a few seconds by going past a stopped bus with the flashing lights– you save only a few seconds, but it will cost you in the long run if you hit and kill a kid and you spend a long time in jail because of it,” he said.
If you spot a vehicle running a school bus stop arm, HPD tells citizens to call 311; if the driver poses a danger to pedestrians and children, call 911. You can also call the Traffic Hotline at (702)267-5099 to report incidents.
