LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Wildfires in the United States cause billions of dollars in damage each year, leaving scars on landscapes, destroying homes, worsening air quality, and disrupting entire communities.
As temperatures begin to rise, officials say now is an ideal time for residents to review safety plans and take steps to reduce wildfire risk around their properties.

What causes wildfires?
Some fires start naturally, most commonly from lightning strikes, but experts note that human activity remains a leading cause nationwide. Among the most common sources:
- Unattended campfires
- Discarded cigarettes
- Sparks from power tools or machinery
Officials say that by taking a few simple steps now, you can lower the risk of wildfires and reduce damage if a fire moves into your area.
Protect your property
Wildfires spread fast when they have fuel. Reduce what can burn by clearing dry leaves and brush, keeping landscaping trimmed near buildings, and avoiding spark-producing tools on hot, windy days.
Fire officials also recommend creating a 100-foot defensible space around your home and using fire-resistant materials when possible.
Make an evacuation plan
Have a plan before you need it. Know more than one way out, decide where you’ll go, and practice with your family. During evacuation, keep car windows up and air vents closed.
Pack an emergency kit
Prepare a go-bag ahead of time with important documents, water, nonperishable food, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and a phone charger.
Talk with neighbors and family
Make sure everyone knows how you’ll communicate, where evacuation zones are, and how to help each other. Communities that plan together tend to respond faster.

Only return when officials say it’s safe. Watch for hidden hot spots, avoid damaged buildings until they’re inspected, and wear protective gear during cleanup.
