LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —Diesel fuel prices across Nevada have surged to unprecedented heights, putting a heavy financial strain on local small businesses and independent truckers.
According to AAA, the average price of diesel in Nevada has jumped 69% compared to last year, climbing from $3.97 per gallon to a record $6.71. Meanwhile, regular unleaded gasoline sits at an average of $5.19 per gallon—roughly 40 cents below its all-time high.
For local business owners, the daily increases are directly squeezing operational budgets.
Robert Eisenstadt, owner of a Las Vegas-based power washing company, relies on diesel to fuel both his work truck and his pressure-washing machinery.
“I have never in my life paid 2, almost $300 for a tank of fuel. This is well over $100 more for just one tank of fuel,” Eisenstadt said. “Everybody needs fuel. Like, I need diesel to run my truck. I need diesel to run my equipment. There’s nothing I can really do about it, which really sucks.”
Contract truck drivers face a similar pinch. Luis Mercado, an independent driver, said his fuel expenses have effectively doubled while cargo hauling rates remain unchanged.
“In the past, I pay like $400, $500, and right now it’s over $1,000. Diesel is really expensive,” Mercado said.
Mercado warned that unless fuel costs drop, freight rates will have to rise, inevitably driving up prices for everyday consumers.
