LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As communities in Mexico continue recovering from flooding caused by Hurricane Priscilla, members of a Las Vegas nonprofit organization are stepping up to help.
For nearly 20 years, the Federacion Hidalguense of Las Vegas has united the local community to raise funds in times of crisis. This time, along the streets of east Las Vegas, members of the nonprofit have set up a small tent, collecting whatever they can to help families who have lost everything after Hurricane Priscilla.
“In the state of Hidalgo, they suffered greatly from the rains, and there were many landslides. People have no food, no clothes, no water,” said Isidro Maqueda, president of Federacion Hidalguense Las Vegas.
Widespread devastation across Mexico
It has been nearly a week since the hurricane unleashed torrential rain across Mexico, killing dozens of people and leaving thousands of homes underwater. In Hidalgo, entire communities remain cut off.
“We have a little box here to put money in so we can see how much is collected each day, and we can also send it and coordinate to buy them the things people need,” Maqueda said.
While the Federacion Hidalguense of Las Vegas is thousands of miles away, Maqueda said their hearts are with home.
“Our people have that culture, we want to support, and that’s why we turn to them. We don’t ask for much; if you have a dollar or two, that’s fine, no problem,” he said.
Communication challenges
Maqueda said it has been an emotional week for them as days pass and members still cannot get in touch with their loved ones in Hidalgo.
“We feel bad because we don’t know what’s going on, if they’re okay or not, but I hope that later on we can get in touch in the coming days,” he said.
The organization will continue collecting donations Friday and Sunday at 1217 Pyramid Drive.
