LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —A program geared toward low-income customers facing water leaks at their homes can receive up to $7,500 in repairs. This is through a Las Vegas Valley Water District program–administered by the City of Las Vegas. The program is also available for Las Vegas Valley Water District customers who live in Clark County.

Ken Kammal discovered the program online after finding a leak in his living room ceiling.

“When you got money already set aside for your kids, college, and other stuff that goes on during the day, just living, and other things that may pop up, it’s good to know that the city has this program to help us out,” Kammal said.

How the program works

Las Vegas city officials say certified contractors inspect and repair leaks. Kammal said the contractor inspected his entire home before making repairs.

“It was just like me calling up a plumber or anybody else on my own. So, they had them come out and they basically went through the whole home. They inspected the whole home before they fixed it. Because they wanted to check for any other drips or leaks that were going on. It was a phenomenal experience,” Kammal said.

Pat Petrie, community resource manager in the Department of Neighborhood Services for the City of Las Vegas, said the program is a partnership with the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the city.

“Which is important because we both recognize that the conservation efforts of water and to help our residents have a safe sanitary place to live are very important and priorities for both of us,” Petrie said.

Water conservation impact

Irrigation leaks waste a lot of water because the water goes into the ground rather than into the storm drain system and into Lake Mead, the region’s main drinking water supply.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District estimates around 70,000 residential customers may have leaks in a given year, wasting about 600 million gallons of water annually. That amount would fill about 15 million standard bathtubs.

Eligibility requirements

Las Vegas officials say applicants must live in the home they own, that has a single water meter. HOAs or condos that share a water meter are not eligible.

There are Income guidelines.

The water district funds its leak assistance programs through the excessive use charge rate paid by the highest residential water users.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District provided the following information to help people connect with the appropriate group.

Homeowners in the City of Las Vegas can call CLV Neighborhood Services to apply and Clark County residents can call United Labor Agency of Nevada to apply. Those contacts are available on lvvwd.com.

For customer that do not qualify for the Low-Income Leak Repair Program can apply for the LVVWD’s Leak Repair Reimbursement Program, which reimburses 50 percent of leak repair cost up to $2000. Apply at LVVWD.com.

They can also apply for the Leak Adjustment Program, which will provide some assistance on their water bill costs related to leaks.

Lastly, LVVWD customers can qualify for low-cost warranty coverage for the service line that connects the meter to the home through American Water Resources. They can obtain that warranty coverage via lvvwd.com. This program uses a third-party that will cover the full cost of service line repairs, which are among the most expensive leak repairs at a home.

Henderson has its own leak assistance program.
