CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has introduced a new bill on education.

Lombardo visited Pinecrest Academy of Nevada to introduce the Nevada Accountability in Education Act.

“After delivering the largest investment in K–12 education in Nevada’s history, we owe it to our communities to match that investment with real results – and real accountability. I’m proud of what we’ve done so far. But let’s be clear – we can no longer accept lack of funding as an excuse for chronic underperformance,” said Governor Joe Lombardo.

“That’s why I’m introducing the Accountability in Education Act, which is legislation built on one guiding principle: No child in Nevada should be trapped in a failing school because of their ZIP code or held back because of how much their parents or guardians earn,” he continued.

The key elements of the legislation are:

  • The bill establishes an account within the State Education Fund to reward continuously high performing teachers and administrators with financial bonuses.
  • The bill would also implement a tiered intervention system across school boards, districts, administrators and teachers related to student performance. Lombardo says this will ensure immediate action ranging from performance improvement plans to state-led oversight and restructuring for chronic underperformance.
  • Expanding open enrollment policies and provide transportation support for students attending low-performance schools. It would also introduce expanded achievement options, including transfers to charter schools or state-approved private schools.
  • Mandates the Science of Reading in teacher prep programs at state-funded colleges and universities and require ongoing professional development for elementary school teachers.
  • Would ensure funding parity to allow charter schools to receive equitable resources.
  • Encourage the establishment of Innovation Schools and Networks to foster localized education reform models.
  • Creates a parent-selected intervention program offering families access to state-approved literacy tutoring and support services.
  • Provides immunity to teachers intervening in student altercations.
  • Ensures education related funds are used for their intended purpose.
  • Creates a process by which teachers, administrators, and school districts can identify education-related reports.
