LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas police will share additional details on an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday in Downtown Las Vegas.

Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi will provide the briefing around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, an officer observed a “suspicious vehicle” parked near Liberace Way and Sherwood Street around 1:47 a.m.

Police say the vehicle reversed and hit an unoccupied vehicle behind it, and the driver exited the vehicle to assess the damage.

An officer attempted to make contact with the suspect, but the suspect turned and ran. After the officer began pursuit, the suspect pointed a firearm at the chasing officer.

Additional officers arrived and witnessed the suspect still armed in the 2000 block of Sherwood Street, and began giving the suspect verbal commands to drop the weapon. When the suspect refused to drop the firearm, officers discharged their weapons at the suspect and rendered aid to the suspect until medical personnel arrived.

The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police say this was the first officer-involved shooting of 2024.
