LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada DMV systems were fully operational Friday, with licenses and identification services back online after a cyberattack that shuttered the department’s in-person services for nearly two weeks.
Visitors waiting for service outside the Nevada DMV location in Henderson expressed frustration with the inconvenience and uncertainty brought on by the statewide shutdown. John Coolack, a Henderson resident since 2009, said he was turned away several times as officials worked to recover from the ransomware-based attack. Coolack’s main criticism was the DMV’s lack of a backup plan.
“They need to have a backup plan,” Coolack said. “Wake up and ask people what the real issues are.”
Angela Giles had similar issues while trying to resolve a title matter involving a classic car she was selling. Without DMV paperwork, she was unable to finalize the sale.
“When I go to the DMV, I don’t know how long it’s going to take,” Giles said. “I have a lot of clients, and then I have to cancel and sit here for God knows how long.”
Susan Andrews had scheduled her renewal months in advance, but when statewide systems went down, her appointment was canceled—along with thousands of others.
Andrews, Giles and Coolack will now have an opportunity to receive the services they’ve been waiting for since the disruption began. DMV systems are now at full capacity, officials said on social media.
“We are shifting focus at our offices to serve customers that need identification transactions,” the post said. “With that being said, we require all customers to use our online services or kiosks for all vehicle transactions, including registration, titling, renewals, moving permits, duplicate decals and more.”
Officials noted that all canceled vehicle appointments from Aug. 25 to Aug. 30 will be accepted as walk-ins through the end of the day Sept. 16. All late fees incurred during the outage will be waived.
As many rush to complete the DMV services they needed weeks ago, Andrews had a simple recommendation to help catch up with the backlog.
“I wish they would open for an hour later, or open up an hour earlier in the morning until they get caught up,” she said.
