NEVADA (FOX5) — The Nevada Treasurer’s Office extended deadlines for two programs aimed at helping families pay for college as in-state tuition is set to increase as much as 12% this fall.
Both programs now have a May 8 cutoff.
Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program
The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program allows families to lock in current in-state tuition rates before the increases take effect. Families who sign up by May 8 will be protected from the higher prices, with the first payment due May 15.
The program was created in 1997. It offers plans covering one year of university, two years of community college or a full four-year university degree. Families can pay in a lump sum or spread payments out over five years, 10 years or monthly until their child graduates high school.

Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship
The state also extended the deadline for the Kenny C. Guinn Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship offers four $5,000 awards — two for college seniors in northern Nevada and two in southern Nevada — who are committed to teaching in Nevada after they graduate.
Students must meet grade and course requirements, be entering their senior year, be studying to become a licensed elementary or secondary teacher, have a strong record of community service and formally commit to teaching in Nevada.
Families and students can call the Treasurer’s Office or go online to learn how to apply.
