LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada transportation officials have released a new statewide road safety plan that sets a goal of reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries by 35% by 2035, with a long-term target of zero fatalities by 2050.

The Nevada Department of Transportation’s 2026-2030 Strategic Highway Safety Plan is built around an analysis of recent crash trends. From 2019 through 2023, Nevada recorded 1,606 traffic deaths and 6,948 serious injuries, according to NDOT.

The plan uses crash data to identify the state’s highest-risk factors and outlines strategies ranging from roadway engineering changes to stepped-up enforcement, public education and improvements in emergency response. NDOT said the plan is intended to align transportation agencies, law enforcement, public health officials, emergency responders and community partners around a coordinated approach.

As part of its outreach efforts, NDOT said it is using dynamic message signs in Southern Nevada to highlight the risk of driving at high speeds. Messages include warnings that speeds over 75 mph, 80 mph and 85 mph are tied to sharply higher fatality risk.

NDOT said progress will be tracked through federally required safety performance measures reported each year to the Federal Highway Administration, including the number of fatalities and serious injuries, related rates, and non-motorized deaths and serious injuries.

The Strategic Highway Safety Plan is updated every five years. NDOT said Nevada’s traffic safety planning efforts date back to 2004, when a technical working group was formed within the agency’s Traffic Safety Engineering Division, and continue today through coordination with the Nevada Executive Committee on Traffic Safety.
