LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A local domestic violence shelter is asking the community to help make Mother’s Day feel “normal” for families starting over.

The Shade Tree, a shelter for women, children and their pets, is getting ready for its annual Mother’s Day boutique. It’s a pop-up “store” inside the shelter where kids can shop for free and pick out special gifts for their moms.

“The goal of this event is to make sure the kiddos and the moms and the families here feel special,” said Tyra Mitchell, director of youth programs and family services at The Shade Tree. “Even though they’re in this shelter setting, we want them to feel comfortable, safe, and seen — and to make these holidays as normal as possible.”

The shelter is asking for new donations, including the following items:

  • skincare
  • jewelry
  • perfume
  • body lotion
  • bath items

Donations can be dropped off at The Shade Tree on West Owens Avenue, Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or scheduled online on the Shade Tree’s website.
