LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man was driving 80 mph in a 35 mph zone during a pursuit that resulted in his arrest on suspicion of DUI, according to an arrest report.
The incident occurred July 16 just after 10 p.m. on southbound Interstate 215 near Cheyenne Avenue.
According to the arrest report, an officer noticed a white pickup truck leaving its lane and swerving multiple times. The officer checked the registration, which was found to be expired as of January 2023 and showed no insurance listed through the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
The officer attempted a traffic stop, the report stated. The pickup truck initially began to pull over but then sped off, police said. The officer pursued the vehicle, which was weaving between lanes. The officer noted the pickup truck was traveling 80 mph in a posted 35 mph zone.
At Buckskin Avenue and Shady Timber Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and I-215, the vehicle abruptly stopped, the arrest report said. The driver threw the keys from the truck and put his hands outside the window. He was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.
The driver was identified by his Nevada driver’s license as Zachary Louis, police documents said. According to police, the officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol, that Louis had bloodshot, watery eyes, and that his speech was slurred.
“Louis had trouble standing up on his own and could not maintain his balance without leaning up against the truck,” the arrest report stated.
Louis told the officer he had run because he was nervous, as he was a police officer. The officer confirmed his identity, and Louis said he had had a few beers earlier. No field sobriety test was performed, the report said, because of Louis’ inability to stand upright.
“The entire way to jail, my patrol car was almost completely consumed by the odor of unknown intoxicating beverage coming from Louis’ person, and I had to turn the air conditioning all the way up,” the report said.
A news release Friday said Louis faces a felony charge of failing to stop for a police officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of driving more than 40 mph over the speed limit, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, unsafe lane changes, DUI, driving without proof of insurance, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Louis will be suspended with pay as the investigation continues, police said. Court records indicate that the state requested more time to file a complaint against Louis, who had been released from custody.
