Police say the devices are frequently operated at unsafe speeds, often by minors who may not be equipped to manage the risks. Officials also say these devices have been linked to serious, and in some cases, fatal crashes.

HPD is also warning parents and guardians that allowing an unauthorized minor to operate a prohibited device is a misdemeanor offense and carries a $415 fine.

Targeted enforcement will continue citywide throughout summer break.

HPD says riders operating prohibited devices should expect citations and immediate towing, with no warnings and no exceptions.
