LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Valley saw another dog dumped outside the Nevada SPCA while the shelter was closed.
On Tuesday at about 6 p.m., security video shows two people leaving an English bulldog in a crate at the shelter’s door.
Nevada SPCA Associate Director, Ebone Smith, said the dog sat unattended for nearly four hours before a passerby took it.
She said it’s not clear if the dog had any food or water.
“I’m not really sure why, when there is a process and there are organizations like ours that will take the dog in or the cat in there is no need to dump,” Smith said.
In Clark County, it is illegal to abandon an animal, with fines ranging from $200-1000 and possible jail time, according to County statutes.
Smith said anyone who wants to surrender a pet at their shelter must fill out an application online, answer some questions, and set up an appointment.
“There’s no judgment. We just want to get all the information that we can so that we can make sure that this pet has the best possible outcome,” Smith said.
She said their waitlist is only out a couple of days.
The Animal Foundation has a similar process.
Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Max Blaustein, said their surrender appointments are booked out to June 13.
He said they take about 8-10 surrender appointments everyday, not to mention surrenders coming through Animal Protection Services.
“Honestly, every day we’re a little bit more underwater than the day before,” he said. “It’s just tough.”
Blaustein said anyone considering surrendering their pet can call their Pet Hotline to make an appointment, or to be connected with resources to help keep their pet in their home.
“There are ways that we can help folks, and if they’re committed, we’re committed,” Blaustein said.
Both Smith and Blaustein said financial barriers are a common reason they hear when owners surrender their pets.
