LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some cyber criminals hope to have you at the word “hello.” Simply responding to that simple greeting could open the door to a scam.
It starts with a “Hello” or “Hi” text from a number you don’t know. Scammers send out thousands of these messages to random numbers, hoping someone texts back. Any sort of response lets them know they’ve reached a real person with an active phone number.
Scammer will then continue to contact you in hopes of gaining both your trust and your personal information.
Here is what is recommended if you get a text like this:
- Do not respond
- Don’t worry about being rude.
- Report the text as spam and block the number.
- Never share any personal information via text message, especially if you don’t recognize the phone number associated with it.
